My son is 4 1/2 and I’ve recently learned his first mom is now starting a family. I haven’t heard from her directly in quite some time. In other words, if she were present in his life this conversation would happen more organically because he would be seeing the changes in her life firsthand.
Anyone have any good book titles aimed at the kindergarten set that will help me find the words to start that conversation with him?
Making Sense of Adoption by Lois Ruskai Melina is the first one that springs to mind. The Open Adoption Experience (also by Lois Ruskai Melina) also has chapters on changes in the adopted child’s life, talking to your child about difficult situations, and children’s questions and concerns about adoption (organized by age). Telling the Truth to Your Adopted Child by Betsy Keefer and Jayne Schooler is another one, although that one is geared more towards difficult conversations about the child’s past.
I hope this helps!
