Our daughter gave up her son for adoption when he was 3 years old, to a relative…beliving that he would then be able to continue to have a close relationship with us. She was very emotionally sick at the time and her cousin who adopted the little boy got her to change it to an closed adoption telling her that it wouldn’t change anything. Is there any chance of changing this to open or would we lose if we as grandparents or even my daughter tried to fight it? The promises that were made in keeping us as grandparents involved have been not been kept.

I suggest contacting an attorney specializing in adoption law. Laws vary from place to place, but unfortunately I suspect that legally what is done is done. You may want to contact the cousin in as non-confrontational way (a hard thing to do when there are as many emotions involved as in adoption & broken promises!) as humanly possible & ask for up-dates or visits. Sometimes just being pro-active is the key. Good luck!
