We adopted our son at 3 days old in 1/08. The paper work for finaalization was submitted to court 3/08. OUR ADOPTION IS STILL NOT FINAL. Our son in now 11 months old. Can’t get courts to give me information and my attorney is very difficult to reach and work with. My husband and I have considered hiring another attorney, but don’t have the money to start over. HELP Is a year too long for a private adoption or do we need to get a new attorney.

where I live, a year is not unheard of, but it seems to me the real problem is that an attorney that yOU are paying is not responding to you. That’s so wrong! Here’s what I would do. I would call another attorney, maybe pay for an hour’s consultation, and get a second opinion. There would be no need to have the new attorney re-do the paperwork that has already been done. It may be a matter of an hour or two for the new lawyer to get a status update. I think it goes without saying that you should not pay any invoices from the old attorney without a status update.
There are probably also procedures for making formal complaints about your lawyer if you think it rises to that level.

Our finalization was over a year after DS was born. Mostly it was because we only have one probate judge, and an uncontested adoption finalization was simply not prioritized.
Our attorney did finally file a motion to get a date, as we were anxious to get his SS# etc. Perhaps you should ask your attorny straight up to do the same.
