I currently work with a young girl who is thinking about giving her baby up for adoption at birth. I have a 4yr old daughter and I am seriously thinking about adopting her baby. I’m 28 but I am not married I’ve been with my boyfriend for 7yrs. I’m really not sure how it works with an open adoption. I think it would be easier for her knowing me and keeping in touch regarding her baby. Any advise would be helpful.

I would actually advise against adopting your coworkers baby. If she see you as a real friend she will need someone like,who is not directing involved, to just talk to. Secondly parenting is a big responsiblity that is very very stressful. If you were to adopt her baby you may feel insecure about parenting because of your close relationship. That might mean that you would stop being friends with her because you may feel insecure about your role. Also, even though it sounds like you are in a commited relationship raising a child is hard on any couple. Are you truly ready to be parents? You really have to talk to this young girl, she may have ideas about finding people that are very different from you, not better, just maybe different. As well, if she were to place her baby with you and when change her mind, which is her right during a certain amount of time, would you still support that decision? Adoption is a complicated process, open adoption requires that people be ready to accept one another despite strong emotions and insecurities. Are you truly ready to face these challanges?
